The Forest is a unique and dynamic place that is always changing.
It's our passion, our philosophy, our freedom and
our challenge that feeds the growth of the solid foundation upon which we stand. The magic of the Amazon rain-forest,
its trees, plants and an
impressive variety of energies, fills our hearts with beauty for more than a lifetime.
Within our arts we intend to deliver the message of such an exceptional beauty,
such a diversity, folkloric traditions and shamans' culture of the Amazon and also to
express our unending gratitude for our Mother Earth.
That's why we're also committed to protecting the environment.
Every single sculpture of our project is the expression of
profound and pure harmony between the human beings and the nature alive. These unique
pieces are a part of the traditions and culture of the people who are immensely respectful
of nature. The fascinating power of their spirit has been transformed into the art of woodcarving together with the power of their land where the life flourishes,
and how true and pure! Our carvings are soaked with the vibes of that green world
delivering you a piece of mystery and knowledge.
That's what we call magic or shamanism,
that is art, beauty and a real challenge to perceive, to hear the call of the foundation
of life in its nakedness. We want people to see that and to respond to that call.
The vast majority of our art is made of Guayacan,
the heartwood of species of the genus Guaiacum. Its latin name lignum vitae is "wood
of life" which is derived from its medicinal uses. Other names are palo
santo, holy wood, greenheart, and of course ironwood.
The indigenous people of the Amazon consider it to have spiritual power and healing properties. Its resin has been used to
treat a variety of medicinal conditions from coughs to arthritis. Wood chips can
also be used to brew a terapeutic tea.
The wood provides natural lubricating oils
which do not dry out, giving a strong, fresh and mysterious aroma to the crafts
made of it. Being one of the densest woods in the world (a density
between 1.28 and 1.37g per cu. cm., so it will sink in water) with the relative
softness of wood compared to metal, ironwood appears as a tough challenge to the
one who carves it.
The indigenous people believe it to accumulate some
secret knowledge, which could be shared with the sculptor under
certain conditions during the ritual of carving. They say it could be extracted
only from a naturally dryed trunk; therefore no living trees
have ever been cut down for our carving purposes.
We identify and mark only the dead trunks to be used in our work because Guayacan is also listed as potentionally endangered specie. Due to its
hardness and density
the wood of the dead trees remains in perfect conditions for decades,
it never rots, never get damaged by bugs or weather conditions.
Being deeply commited to protecting the environment
we consider that to be an important
reason to choose that very type of wood for our
carving project.
Our webshop is just the first step of our global project
"Mae da Mata". We devote our hearts to learning and protecting the Amazon and our
Mother Nature.
